Biden and Palin on Gay Marriage

In case you missed it, here's the part of the debate where Biden and Palin talked about gay marriage. A few points:

1) Realizing that straight people are in the majority in this country it still rankles when I hear them talk -- as Sarah does -- about "tolerating" us gays. I guess tolerate us like a skin rash that will eventually go away.
2) She implies "some of my best friends are gay." I wonder.
3) Biden pinned her down at the end as supporting full and equal civil rights for same sex couples as couples, the same as straight people get. Let's see how long that stands.

Locker Room Reax on McCain, Bush

I work out on weekdays in a decidedly GOP-leaning gym in tony Old Town Alexandria. The reax, both to Bush's speech and McCain's "suspension" of his campaign (is his staff reporting to work today?) was decidely mixed. My favorite comment was that Bush during his speech "looked like he was having a root canal." As indeed he should. Where the hell has he been?

Reax to the campaign suspension (which itself requires a suspension of disbelief to take seriously) was mostly negative. One woman said to her workout partner about McCain: "what a loser!" And here I had her pegged as a blue-haired matron of the Republican Woman's Club.

These people see the McCain move for the desperate PR stunt it is. there is nothing McCain, or Obama, for that matter, could do to help the process that they couldn't do from anywhere in the country. Going back to Washington is a distraction to the legislators during the real work.

McCain is following the worse course you can in a crisis: When in doubt, run in circles and scream and shout. Or as George Will put it he is substituting vehemence for coherence.

This is not a McCain we can beleive in.

Bugg on the Debate

Sean Bugg live blogged the Dem debate the other night and he gives a good recap:

9:23 -- Scary realization: I can't drink enough to make Hillary Clinton sound like a reasonable choice for president.

I thought Hillary blew a softball question when she was asked "What would you do different from Obama on day one? She went on to give a laundry list of policy initiatives. But she never answered the question, which shows there is no substance to her mantra that she -- and only she -- is "ready" on day one.
