What causes this? It goes beyond mere prejudice -- I could understand a "pre-judgement" that all gay men are sissies, for example. I don't understand the hatred. At its root is insecurity, I'm sure. I just don't understand why a successful straight man like Hardaway (ironic last name, given the circumstances) would be so insecure. Unless he's got some feelings for men deep down he is too frightened to face.

Spot-on! As the very universally and academically agreed-upon definition of the word states, homophobia is "an irrational fear of homosexuals." Irrational!
Like you said, unless he's battling his own insecurities and/or homosexual feelings, he wouldn't have the need to fear gays or openly refer to himself as homophobic in interviews.
Or maybe he's just an ignorant moron. Either way, I'm not losing much sleep over it.
I'm not losing any sleep over it either -- I just don't understand hatred like this. But I'm not going waste my breath "demanding" he apologize -- what's the point? Even his proffered apology doesn't mean he's changed his mind.
