I'm watching the returns, Hil leads Barack by 4 points at this moment. Here's what I think:
McCain took independents away from Obama.
The tears helped Hillary. It was an incredible human moment and what did she need? To show she could be human.
The Clinton's organization was able to match the Obama organization in turnout.

Highly unlikely that McCain pulled more independents than Obama. The independents are breaking toward the Democrats this year. A more likely explanation is the contrarian nature of New Hampshire: they don't tend to like the ones that everyone in the media brands as "inevitable."
And for my money, that's a good thing. We shouldn't be picking our candidates for president on the basis of the opinions of two small, incredibly rural, incredibly agricultural, and incredibly white states. I'm glad we're going to have a horse race for a while--and it wouldn't bother me in the slightest if we didn't know who the nominee was going to be until after the convention proper was over. Just like in the olden days.
