Gratuitous Power

No, I'm not talking about the office of the Vice President.

I just returned from Las Vegas. For someone who would never by choice visit Vegas, this is the third time I've been there this year.

It was 112 degrees.

I'm struck by one thought each time I visit: all the energy required, not just to light and cool the city, but just to get water there. And this city exists for one purpose: recreation.

Somehow, the whole idea of Las Vegas seems anachronistic.

Most of that water is gray water, actually. And quite a bit of the energy they need is generated cleanly and quite cheaply by the Hoover Dam.

As to the only purpose of the town being entertainment, what of it? At least it has a purpose--and it fulfills that purpose quite successfully, which is more than I can say for a lot of little towns that are barely hanging on by a thread these days because somebody decided to put down roots there 150 years ago.

Next time you're in Vegas, check out Red Rock Canyon or some of the other natural wonders in the area. There's way more to Vegas than just the Strip and the casinos.

(Truth in advertising: I'll be there myself tomorrow, though only briefly, before heading north to Utah and thence to Yellowstone.)

Michael -- when I was there in January for three weeks I spent a couple of Saturdays in Red Rock.
Have fun -- I've always wanted to go to Yellowstone.
