Conversation with a family member today, consulting on Christmas gifts. Without boring you with the whole conversation, it was essentially me saying, "what about X?" and the family member responding mostly in the affirmative then adding, "just get it at [large national chain store] so they can take it back if they don't like it."Seriously, why am I not just writing checks or giving gift cards?

My advice... no gift exchanges this year... instead... spending time together, sharing a nice meal, some nice wine, music and photos, etc. That's what we are doing. Because let's face it... do we really need more stuff? If there is something you need, you get it yourself, right? And you can argue it's better to give than receive... what's better than giving your time and companionship to someone special?
I made this point to my mother last year, and she looked at me as if she had seen a Grinch.
