Obama Hints at Support for Teacher Merit Pay

Speaking to the National Education Association meeting here, he said:

"If you excel at helping your students achieve success, your success will be valued and rewarded as well."

This comment was greeted with silence and a few boos. That's because the NEA is not really about the children.

Now, see, I think there's a certain nuance to his statements recently. It's not so much that without student success, you can't get a raise. He seems to be talking about added bonuses on top of raises. And I'm down with that. I think any rational person can see the virtue in that. I'm sorry to hear that he was greeted with silence and a few boos about this because he seems to be on not only the popular side of the issue, but the right side.

And I'm sorry to hear that you'd take such an extreme stance against the NEA. They're doing their jobs like everyone else. Students come first but self-interest is a close, close second. Of course.

Obama's wording is downright brilliant too. I like him more and more every day -- especially when I see the rest of the field on both sides.
